Manager Pre -Production Management

Pre-Production Management Manager


Job Summary:         


The PPM (Pre-Production Management) manager coaches a team of PPM engineers that handles production planning, material requirements planning, verification of the product structure and bill of material, and local coordination of engineering changes (material change orders) for all cars (customer cars and pre-series cars) produced in the Charleston plant.

The PPM team also monitors and maintains parameters in the production system, to ensure the manufacturing of bodies and cars in perfect sequence. Finally the PPM manager is responsible for a team that handles inventory control and cycle counting. The PPM manager has sufficient operational knowledge of the PPM processes and systems to be able to execute key activities. The PPM manager and his team work closely together with Supply Chain Coordination, Customs, Production and other engineering departments.

Principal Responsibilities:

    • Member of the plant MP&L management team.
    • Oversee the following PPM engineering activities:
      • Discuss volumes and capacities in the Master Production Schedule with HQ in Sweden and with the MP&L and production departments in the Charleston plant.
      • Convert the Master Production Schedule to orders in the plant MRP system.
      • Manage the order book of customer orders in cooperation with HQ in Sweden.
      • Verify product structure and bill of material for all planned orders.
      • Analyze material change orders, update MRP and production steering systems, and coordinate the introduction of the change orders.
      • Provide data about the engineering changes to other departments.
      • Run preliminary and fixed production plans for material requirements planning, as input for material call-off orders to batch and sequence suppliers.
      • Manage parameters in the production system and monitor the delivery of bodies from welding shop to paint shop and from paint shop to final assembly in order to secure perfect sequence production.
      • Prepare and publish production planning schedules for welding shop, paint shop and final assembly, taking into account the work day calendar, restrictions and capacities of each planning point.
      • Track key performance indicators and take corrective actions if necessary.
      • Inventory control and cycle counting, managing the claims process related to the Foreign Trade Zone in cooperation with the Customs team.
    • Build and maintain relationships with colleagues in HQ in Sweden and in other manufacturing plants.
    • Conduct performance reviews and appraisal talks with PPM employees.
    • Manage and drive the operational development of the team‘s deliverables for quality, cost, delivery and improvement.
    • Promote development of the PPM employees, and secure correct competence in the team.
    • Secure the involvement of PPM in studies and projects.
    • Monitor workload and task assignments within the PPM team.
    • Support, communicate and guide the implementation of VCMS (Volvo Car Manufacturing System) in the PPM team.
    • Develop, document and maintain personal competence within areas such as Management, VCC Quality system, Process and Product strategies, MP&L Program process, organizations and processes within VCC & M&L (Manufacturing & Logistics).


Job Specifications:



  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in supply chain or logistics. Relevant education or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant work experience preferably within automotive pre-production management.
  • Experience with automotive logistics, knowledge of logistic processes within a plant with focus on the material and production planning processes.
  • Project experience in logistics management areas.
  • Solid knowledge of logistics, business economics and business skills and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
