Cost Engineer - Plastics

 

Job Summary:  

The Cost Engineer with an expertise in Plastics is an internal and external challenger in terms of cost and content (value for money). The focus areas are cost-optimized design solutions and competitive cost, from concept phase until end of production. The cost engineer actively provides fact-based input to secure best price/optimized cost. 

 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of plastics systems/parts in line with the overall strategy to cover and maximise impact of total spend from early engineering phases until end of production.   
  • Develop innovative cost models for both piece price and tooling within the plastics commodity. Also, apply and perform value analysis methodology by integrating and analyzing complex and diverse information sources. 
  • Challenge VCC organisation and Suppliers to use state of the art Manufacturing Process, Tool Concepts and Material Selection for plastic parts and systems.
  • Identify shortcomings in supplier manufacturing processes and total value chains. Suggest and negotiate appropriate improvements with the purpose to increase the overall effectiveness. 
  • Analyze and evaluate proposed (by suppliers) costs for technical changes, claims related to volume, raw material etc., and challenging the organization based on the results. 
  • Develop and/or deliver a plan for how to challenge the suppliers in collaboration with the cross functional team. 
  • Uncover emerging issues or needs, identifying potentials and barriers for cost effective tool concepts and manufacturing technologies in the development/engineering phase. 
  • Develop cost engineering best practices and interpret and apply this to achieve specified outputs, then monitor implementation of those procedures within the organization. 
  • Recommend changes to processes, standards and practices that would improve operational support. 
  • Act as a mentor for plastics expertise within the Procurement Team

 

Job Specifications

Knowledge/Requirements:

  • Technical University degree. Relevant education or equal qualifications.
  • Tool Engineering Expertise / Journeyman’s Card from Dept. of Labor strongly preferred
  • Experience in bottoms up cost calculations for piece price and tooling
  • Minimum of 10 years’ working experience preferred.
